The earth has been around for about 4.6 billion years…give or take a millennium or 2.  I have been lucky enough to see many different places on the earth.  Mountains, deserts, rivers, oceans, jungles etc.  Every time I go out into the wilderness I get this awesome feeling of being somewhere special.  Whether or not you believe in the big bang, divine creation, aliens, evolution or something totally different, one thing I hope we can all agree on is that we depend on the Earth, and that it is in our own best interest as a species to treat it well.

Sadly, we may not all agree on this fact:  We have not treated it well.  We are paying for mistakes previous generations made.  Granted, those mistakes were made without any of the scientific information we have today.  But….now we do have it and it is up to us to decide whether or not to apply it, or forget it.  Too often, too many people simply forget it.  I think it is easier to do that.  I think outdoors types (like me) tend to be more aware of the environment and its fragility.  Small things create big problems down the line.  Ecosystems can fall apart simply by removing 1 species of insect.  Reagan had the trickle down theory of economics, well the earth has the trickle down, up, and sideways.  Everything effects everything.  Including us.

The environmental movement, if you want to call it that, started with John Muir writing about his travels in the High Sierra.  He, like myself and many others, was moved by the sheer awesomeness (is that a word?) of nature.  I meet so many people now, even living in LA, that have never been to the desert, to the mountains, swimming in a river, or maybe even to the beach.  I ask myself, how can I expect those people to make better decisions regarding the environment around them.  The environment around them is not in many cases, that beautiful.  Well, thats what I am doing this for.

My goal for this project is to help people become better informed.  The more you know type of thing.  I will write about places i’ve been to, things I’m doing, products i’m using, and people doing great, or terrible things.  We have finally reached a point where I think the majority believes that we should be thinking more about how we are impacting the environment….some are only thinking with their wallets but thats good enough for me.  Whatever makes you make the better decision.

So, check my sight out often.  I will write about many different things, and hopefully I can change some minds and behaviors along the way.

Thanks,

Dave

Excellent reading! Many valid and valuable points. You should be either a history teacher, or a commentary writer for the newspaper. And,by the way, you do NOT have ADD. I know this because I am your mother. You are just a very intelligent, but very opinionated individual, and I like it that way.
